Sometimes you don’t have to travel far to find something special, and MainPower Oval in Rangiora is a perfect example.
With its beautifully maintained cricket ground, white picket fencing, open green spaces and peaceful surroundings, MainPower Oval is one of North Canterbury’s standout sporting facilities.
Located on Coldstream Road in Rangiora, the oval is home to Canterbury Country Cricket and has welcomed everything from local club matches to some of New Zealand’s leading cricket teams.

There’s something special about watching cricket on a sunny Canterbury afternoon, particularly at a venue like MainPower Oval.
The well-kept outfield, attractive pavilion and relaxed atmosphere give the ground a traditional country cricket feel.
It’s a venue that looks just as impressive in photographs as it does in person.
In fact, MainPower Oval was included in a New Zealand Herald feature naming the country’s top 10 cricket grounds, recognising its picturesque setting and classic cricket atmosphere.
That’s something for North Canterbury to be proud of!
While MainPower Oval is an important home for local cricket, it has also played a significant role in Canterbury’s sporting history.
The ground underwent a major redevelopment in the early 2000s and hosted its first first-class cricket match in February 2004, when Canterbury played Central Districts.
Since then, the venue has hosted a range of domestic competitions, including Plunket Shield, one-day and Twenty20 cricket.
It has also welcomed international age-group cricket, including matches during the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.
Following the Canterbury earthquakes, MainPower Oval became an important alternative home venue for Canterbury Cricket while Christchurch’s major cricket facilities were unavailable.
Not bad for a cricket ground in Rangiora!
Facilities like MainPower Oval are about much more than the games played on them.
They provide opportunities for local players, clubs, volunteers and supporters to come together, while helping North Canterbury host sporting events that attract people from outside the region.
A huge amount of work goes into maintaining a cricket ground to this standard, from preparing the pitches and outfield to managing the facilities and organising matches.
It’s a credit to Canterbury Country Cricket and everyone involved in looking after the venue.

MainPower Oval is located at the Rangiora Recreation Ground, near the corner of East Belt and Coldstream Road, Rangiora.
