Looking for free things to do in Rangiora or a fun outdoor activity in North Canterbury?
There’s a fantastic new addition to Rangiora’s recreational attractions, and it’s something the whole family can enjoy!
The Rangiora Disc Golf Course officially opened in July 2026, offering locals and visitors a free, nine-hole disc golf experience beside MainPower Stadium on Coldstream Road.
Whether you’re looking for a weekend activity, something to do during the school holidays or simply a reason to get outdoors, this is one local attraction worth checking out.
Disc golf is similar to traditional golf, but instead of using clubs and balls, players throw specially designed flying discs towards metal baskets.
The goal is simple: complete each hole in as few throws as possible.
Players start from a designated tee area and continue throwing from wherever their disc lands until it reaches the basket.
Different discs can be used for long-distance throws, accuracy and putting, although beginners don’t need specialised equipment to get started.
It’s a great activity for families, groups of friends and people of different ages and abilities.

The Rangiora Disc Golf Course features nine holes, all rated par 3, with a total playing distance of approximately 620 metres.
The course begins near MainPower Stadium, following the open spaces behind the stadium and hockey turf before continuing into the trees beside MainPower Cricket Oval.
The first few holes feature longer, open fairways, while the later holes offer shorter, more technical challenges where players need to navigate trees and other obstacles.
Depending on your group size and experience, a round can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.
And the best part? It’s completely free to play!
You don’t need to own any equipment to give disc golf a try.
Disc hire is available from MainPower Stadium reception for just $5 per set.
This makes it an affordable option for families, especially during weekends and school holidays.
Disc hire is subject to stadium reception hours. The course may also have temporary closures during major cricket games or other sporting events.

Here’s something particularly special about the Rangiora Disc Golf Course.
The project was designed and installed by NC Sports, with input from local disc golf enthusiasts and support from the Waimakariri District Council, Rangiora-Ashley Community Board, Canterbury Country Cricket and local business sponsors.
The course was developed without direct council funding for its construction, thanks to the efforts of the North Canterbury Sport and Recreation Trust and supporting businesses.
It’s a great example of what can be achieved when local organisations, businesses and community members work together.
Initiatives like this help make Rangiora an even better place to live, providing accessible recreational opportunities for the wider community.
A big thank you to everyone who helped bring the project to life!
If you’re planning to give disc golf a go, here are a few simple tips:
